What a strange year it's been

At the beginning of the year I was listening to artsy fartsy depressing indie hipster /mu/core music and now I'm really into cheezy bouncy electro house preferably with ponies. I have no idea what my favorite song from 2011 was but this one is pretty high on the list.

Enjoy 2012...

Magic Johnson

Ok, I guess I am old.

Goddamnit, Randall

This is not what I wanted to see while catching up on my comics on a Monday morning. Especially the alt-text.

I'm not even 40 yet. If you'll excuse me, I need to go buy a Mustang convertible.

Knock 'em out the box, Rick

This was my favorite rap song in high school. At least until I got a bootleg copy of a copy of Move Somethin' by The 2 Live Crew.

I still have no idea what the hell Keystone Kops, a super creepy statue and a midget in a nightcap has to do with this song.

Nostalgia is getting weirder

I was flipping through the music stations on my cable the other day and found an old-school hip-hop station. Ever since then I've been mildly obsessed with listening to rap music from the late '80s to the early '90s.

Woop woop! KRS-One did a show/talk at my college sophomore year. I didn't go but I walked past the sign advertising it about 500 times on the way to and from class. Maybe I shoulda gone? Stupid reality interfering with my nostalgia.

Happy college memories

ding a ding dang my dang a long ling long

I first heard this song in college and I liked it so much I bought the tape. (yes cassette tape, I is an old bastard) I was mixed up in a junior conservative recruitment scam disguised as a campus Christian group at the time. One of the girls who attended the cult meetings devotionals noticed the tape one day and asked "Ministry? Oh, is that a Christian group?" I thought about it and told her that they did indeed sing songs about Jesus. One of my cleverer friends who caught on to the brainwashing before everyone else laughed his ass off. We never got to date any of the future Stepford Wives in the group. We did start ditching meetings to watch the Simpsons on one of the UHF channels. Everything turned out just fine.

Ow, my childhood

Well, my collegehood at least. I was pretty childish in college.

I lost track of Weezer after Pinkerton but I had no idea they were doing commercial jingles now. The sad thing is it's kinda good.

I love Cake

My favorite slice of Cake:

Cake also has a new album out and is on tour. Just about every band I really like has/is/will be releasing an album this year. If Camper Van Beethoven and The Pixies release an album, this year will officially be the best year ever for music. Oh shit, David Lowery DID release an album. Get to work, Pixies!

Sabotaged

Apparently some naughty person leaked the clean version of the Beastie Boys' new album.

To combat this heinous act, the Beasties are streaming the filthy dirty nasty version of the album.

Fight for yer rights, peeps.

Weird Al has a new album coming out

Ignore the Gaga brouhaha, that's just viral marketing. I'm posting this video aren't I? See, Weird Al just got free advertising right here to maybe two or three people! PURE GENIUS

In other news how the smeg did I miss this??? That may be the second greatest song about Charles Nelson Reilley ever.

No, thank YOU

Mighty nice of Ed, Colin, Jonny, Philip & Thom.

Ear Bleach

Here's real Ruby Soho after yesterday's debacle.

Friday, April 08, 2011

I don't like Vampire Weekend anymore

Well, it's not like I really liked them before, I was pretty neutral about them actually. I was surprised when I heard one of their songs used in a Target commercial and thought that was kind of cool, but didn't have an opinion either way.

Then I heard this:

Sorry guys, you may be the finest indie-rock band named after a calendar monster but you don't fuck with Ruby.

This on the other hand is perfectly acceptable.

Geronimoooooooooooo

And Fergus. Or vice versa. Whatever. When I heard this song on the radio I was all "Zappa on the radio, WTF?"

But it's NOT Zappa. It's Fergus. And Geronimo. On the radio. Well, college radio. Which is the best radio.

Kiwi skaters are insane

Skateboarding in Christchurch after the earthquake with Radiohead accompaniment.

Falling into a gaping crack in the earth after a quake is one of my personal irrational phobias, so this might be the first time I've ever cheered on the police for hassling kids on skateboards.

My favorite song from The King of Limbs

After listening to the album a few times this was the song I kept coming back to over and over. That bass line makes me happy. The album itself is very tight, I don't get the hate.

Also: Radiohead fans are insane. Like, Paul is dead conspiracy insane. I mean this as a compliment.  AAAAAHHH THE BEES

Arcade Fire - Rococo

Oh dear God what is that horrible song they're singing

Best song from the best album of 2010. I didn't even like Arcade Fire until I heard this.

However, the Grammys are still shit.

The Egyptian Lover - Egypt, Egypt

This just seemed appropriate for some reason.

The pyramids are oh so shiny... ??

Monday, February 07, 2011

Cruel Angel's Thesis

Not gonna lie, I saw a post about Neon Genesis Evangelion on Metafilter and got all Gainaxtalgic.

I don't know why I like foreign pop music so much, probably because I can't tell how vapid the lyrics are and there's no pop celebrity baggage to bum me out.

And I had Muffin Man running through my head today for no reason.

Undead Milkmen

The Dead Milkmen aren't dead! They have recorded a new album that will maybe probably sorta come out in March or April. I got so excited I went out and bought Eat Your Paisley in anticipation.

Here's a cut from the new album plus my favorite song from Not Richard, But Dick. I know that everything will be all right...

Most Loathsome of 2010

I look forward to this article every year. 2010 was particularly loathsome, wasn't it?

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Available

The Residents' Not Available album was re-released today.

If you could get through that, here's the playlist for the entire album.

If you can get through that, then buy the fucking thing. It ain't but 12 bucks or so.

I've always been a little skeered of the Residents meself. I was introduced to them through some Primus covers, about crapped myself when I saw the Third Reich 'n Roll album cover for the first time, have discovered that a hell of a lot of my favorite bands are influenced by them, and finally broke down and bought a used copy of Animal Lovers last week. I'm worried I might be on some kind of watchlist now. The good thing about being on that kind of watchlist is if if They finally round us all up at least I'll get to hang out with some interesting people for the rest of my life.

Stevie Wonder - Pastime Paradise

Is there anyone better than Stevie?

If you say Coolio, I'll smack you.

If you say Weird Al... well... you might have a point there.

Maybe.

Friday, January 07, 2011

Gerry Rafferty - Night Owl

Lotsa people dying already this year. I heard this song for the first time when I was reading a memorial thread on Rafferty and I can't get it out of my head now. Godspeed Gerry.

I was going to post this a couple of days ago but Blogger had a case of the yips. So much for one post a day this year.

Tuesday, January 04, 2011

I thought that music mattered

But does it? Bollocks.

Not compared to how people matter.

Sleigh Bells - Riot Rhythm

If someone put a gun up to my head and demanded I tell them my favorite album from 2010 I would immediately blurt out ARCADE FIRE!!! SUBURBS!!!

But got-DAMN ain't Sleigh Bells catchy.....

(bang)

Peter Cushing lives in Whitstable

I have seen him on his bicycle.

He also can't be mesmerized.

Me too

Time to make your new year's resolutions.

Mine should probably be to post here more than once a month.
